Rossi signs €2.5 million sponsorship deal with Monster Energy

MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with energy drink Monster, worth a reported €2.5 million.

Under the terms of the deal, Rossi will earn an extra €500,000 should he win the 2009 World Championship. The Monster-Rossi accessory range has been released, with hat and helmet adorned with the three-scratch “M” logo.

Monster has moved its athlete endorsement from American rider John Hopkins, a sponsorship deal which helped reduce the cost a team had to incur to have Hopper riding with them.

It is believed Monster’s defection to Rossi means Hopkins is going to have to take a significant pay-cut. Hopkins raced for Kawasaki in 2008 but is yet to secure a ride for the 2009 MotoGP season.

An official statement regarding the sponsorship deal is expected this week.

I think it might be only transferring money from the dropout team to the winning team, another article reports:

"Responding to Kawasaki's MotoGP withdrawal, Monster Energy has shifted its sponsorship budget to eight-time world champion Valentino Rossi."

Sponsors go with winners. Hopkins has not been that. Melandri would have been a better bet. Rossi will get any company noticed even if he loses.

+1 Monster will get a LOT of exposure with Rossi.

I'm still saddened Kawi dropped out, the more teams in the sport the better it is for competition, their total sales, and the better it is for all of us consumers

I'm saddened that this has happened with Kawasaki, but I'm excited that the pairing is with Valentino Rossi. It is such a privilege to have watched him all of these years, and counting. Like watching Michael Jordon, Tiger Woods, and Lance Armstrong making history. Incredible. Hopefully Kawi will make a comeback at some point.

The good part is Dorna is holding their feet to the fire at least for 2009. It looks more and more like there will be a Kwak or two on the line this year.

Me too.
The original Monster deal with Kawasaki had a clause allowing Monster to move up to being title sponsor of the MotoGP team in 2009, and that deal will obviously have fallen through.

Rossi and Chrysler? All I see is Fiat possibly taking a minority stake in Chrysler.

I've been expecting our car companies to become foreign owned but lately they haven't deemed themselves to being worthwhile such as our banks that have taken investments fron Saudi and China

The Arai "Hopkins Monster" Helmet is getting cheap in many places. Locally here it can be had for $550, which is a steal

I can get one at the local Honda shop for $400ish they are closing out their helmets and their base price is $550. The sign says UP TO 40% off. The problem is I already have 2 Rx7 Arais and a Profile. I am having a hard time justifying another. But at that price Maybe I should just go for it.

Great deal on a great helmet… but what about all the 2009 Monster Energy Kawasaki bikes.

Are they going to heavily discount them now or are they going to throw in a free paint job…

I would think that someone in Kawasaki management is thinking... I told you we should not have clear coated those stickers!
