Driveline clunk

Hello, I know I have been gone for quite a while but I noticed something recently and wander if it's a problem or not.

While on the centerstand, if you move the wheel with your foot in neutral I hear a clunk like every 1/2 revolution or so, I am wandering if this is normal, or signs of a possible u joint problem. I have no issues riding it, did my first wheelie about a month ago... Was trying to show off for my friend who has the same bike, I was in the lead taking off from a red light and at about 3k decided to hit her hard thinking it would just burn the tire, nope just shot for the sky! I think with a throttle chop it may get the fron wheel off the ground in 2nd.

All I can say is that I have had the bike for 16 months with no issues whatsoever, flies out rocks, and no tire pressure sensor problems either. It in reality is the best bike I ever owned, period, and have owned 15 street bikes in my life, even zx-11 and hayabusa. The helibars gave me what I needed for comfort, the pc3 flies out and 2 bros slip on gave it balls, it's all the power I need. I have ran wot in the first three gears and you get up to speed quick, quick enough to loose my licence!

Anyways, if anyone tries what I said above let me know, bike is scheduled to go in for the final recall next sat, and I willhave them listen to it as well....

Thanks,
Rob

Recal is for the stupid rear brake guard, you know to keep the 1 in a million rock from getting jammed in it.. Glad to hear someone has the same noise, like I said I do not hear or feel it while riding, just on the center stand in neutral.

The only other time is when I am running it on the centerstand in gear, all kinds of driveline noises....

Thanks for the input,
Rob

I have a different noise that really freaks me out, it's in the engine.. When I start cold engine it makes some knocking noises for about 1-2 seconds, I know it's called - dry start, I spoke to couple of mechanics and they are both saying it's normal, but I don't like it anyways.. I was always using the best synthetic oils, best oil filters, with same result - god damn dry start knocking is always there, every morning, hate that thing.. Anyone else ?

Anybody has an idea if ZX14 and C14 chain tensioner is interchangeable? Here is the link, there is MANUAL chain tensioner for ZX14, will it fit for C14 ? https://www.zx14.net/shop/product_info.php?products_id=228&osCsid=8eua338hqhqod4jgnq1va09bi3

I put a manual one on my 08 ZX, but in retrospect, it was a waste. Aside from the startup rattle, there's no reason at all to switch. You do have to adjust the manual one from time to time or you will end up blowing up your motor...

On my C, I hear that startup rattle...but it's only that, nothing to even think about. Save your $ and crank up your iPOD so you don't have to listen to it -- I did 35K km's on my 06 ZX and never had any issue...and it rattled all the time on startup.

The only time I ever heard that noise whas when changed my oil, Bike sits for maybe a month, no noise, hot or cold. It sounds like a leaky cam chain tensioner, I would want it replaced under warranty.... It's either that or you are using a piece of crap ol filter which is draining back to the pan. I always use the kawi filter.

clunk

I had a similar clunk in mine. Never really got worse, but i took it in anyway, and they ended up replacing the entire shaft assy. They never really specified what was wrong, however I suspect it was probably a u joint.
Anyway, it won't hurt to have them take a listen.
BTW, mine only made the sound when it was cold, so ya might have to leave it overnight in order for them to hear it.

Either oil pressuew is not getting there fast enough, or filter is draining back, lastly it couild be a bad tendioner. Does you oil light go out right away when you first start it? Mine does on the 3rd starter cycle. I am now runnning amsoil 10w40, 1400 miles om it, I would suppose the noise gets worse with higher milage...

On my bike oil light goes off right away, on starter crank. I did try different oil filters including kawi filter, same thing.. The noise seems getting worse with more miles on the bike, I guess timing chain gets loose, thats why.

Anyone who has a noise at startup should take it to the dealer and get it fixed... The tensioner, I assume has a spring in it and oil press to back it up. A ratttling chain I am sure is no good for the guides. I still am going to get gttp off of ebay when I have the $$$. I also want the areap full system, but had too many other projects this year, which was upgrading my 2003 kx500, and restoring the 2004 kx 500 (which has 10 mins on it, never been in the dirt, but sat in some humid condition), The lower chrome fork legs are pitted, this was one bad ebay deal, guy used a pic from the original owner than probably kept it in a shed or was in a flood, it's weird where the corrosion is, just here and there, not all over.
Already spent 800 in parts, which includes the lower legs, one of which has been backordered for 2.5 months, and it does not end there, I want it back to showroom new, all the stickers and all and hang on to it for 10 yrs, last year made, last big bore 2 stroke, it's gotta be worth some money down the line. If I was rich I would get an mps kx500af, but starting at 11 grand, that's a lot for a dirt bike,

Reguards,
Rob

I went to dealer and was told that startup rattling is normal for this particular engine, 99% of ZX14 and C14 have that noise and running forever without any problems. Anyways, even if I had insisted to replace tensioner what would they do? They would replace it with exactly the same model of tensioner, because there is no newer model exist yet, and there is no recall for it either. So, what I did was I went online, found the aftermarket tensioner designed for racing bikes ( that why it's manual ) and installed it. And what do you think? NO STARTUP RATTLE AT ALL ! Engine is amazingly quiet now. I don't mind to adjust the tensioner every 10K miles - it's not a big deal, that startup rattle was freaking me out a lot, it was the only one thing I did not like about concours 14. The tensioner model is APE KTZX14, can be found freely on internet, it cost around $50 and it takes about 30 min to install it.
