Honda jump starts 2013 with six new models

By Jon Row

American Honda expanded its 2013 line up today with a diverse group of additional new products. While several were expected there were a few definite surprises. Citing a continuing goal to expand the market, Big H headlined this intro with a trio of feature-laden, rider-friendly, liquid cooled, twin cylinder 500cc models. These latest “Value for Money” series will come in Naked, Sport and Adventure versions (F, R and X) each with an aggressive price point and also available as an ABS option. Looks like they’ll be great entry-level machines or step-ups for 250 class riders.

For retro lovers and the multitudes that’ve worshipped the original CB750 and its genre, AHM brings in an American version of the long awaited CB1100R. Also known as the tribute bike, it debuted earlier in Japan, Australia and Europe however U. S. riders will get more polished pieces and wheel details while the Euro and other versions make do with more painted parts and mono color wheels. The 1140cc DOHC air-cooled package is a real beauty in person right down to the 70’s era taillight. The $9,999 SRP (non ABS version) is impressive too given its Japan production base.

The highly revised 2013 CBR600RR is intent on proving Honda’s wind tunnel expertise and Moto GP techno transference ability in more ways than one. A big focus on aerodynamics in this highly anticipated update is said to yield notable ram air engine improvements and a host of other benefits. A new, big piston, front fork and rear suspension upgrade are also incorporated. A C-ABS model is available as well.

From the “bet you didn’t see this coming” file, a fun alternative role for the venerable Gold Wing engine. The mean looking Gold Wing F6B. What’s the “B” for? Boxer, Bagger, or Bad Ass….Honda says take your pick. Judging from the lofty prices Valkies and Runes still command, Honda’s famous six-cylinder smoothie has proven its desirability in non-touring guises before. This newest flat six bad boy sports heady styling and drops 60 pounds by dispensing with reverse, rear trunk and cruise control. Losing so much top weight brings the center of gravity to absurdly low levels; something you can feel just tipping it off the side stand. In addition to the one-off, Pawn Stars-worthy look, it will likely be a good handling ride. A deluxe version features heated grips and a nifty backrest which, combined with the expansive gun fighter seat, should prove highly attractive to favorite long legged passengers.

Additional 2013 revised and updated models include the VFR1200F, CBR1000RR, CB1000R, CRF450X & 250X, Silver Wing, and Ruckus

Detailed new model info and pics below the following overview from Honda.

Honda says:

As Honda’s lineup of 2013 motorcycles grows, the excitement is building as well. This latest announcement features brand-new models as well as a large assortment of returning favorites that carry strong demand among riding enthusiasts.

“This most recent release of wide-ranging brand-new models along with returning favorites is really exciting news for all riding enthusiasts,” said Powersports Press Manager Bill Savino. “The six new models we’re introducing today in the U.S. include five all-new motorcycles that represent some very innovative thinking on the part of Honda’s engineers and product planners, and they all bring their own distinct appeal to separate portions of the market. We’ve got the Gold Wing F6B, an ultra-cool big-displacement bike with a powerful six-cylinder engine that’s ready for cruising around town or weekend trips; an affordable, nimble-handling middleweight CBR500R sport bike that’s just the right size for newer riders moving up in displacement categories as well as for more experienced riders; the CB500F naked bike for riders in search of a mid-sized entry-level sporty bike that’s also a convenient daily ride; the middleweight CB500X adventure-style bike for newer or experienced riders who want to add a little escapism to their lives; a fresh take on the timeless air-cooled four-cylinder Honda performance machine, the CB1100, which boasts a muscular 1140cc engine; and a substantially redesigned CBR600RR, the newest and hottest iteration of the bike that singlehandedly redefined the 600cc sportbike class. We’ll also see three more favorite big-displacement Hondas return for 2013: the VFR1200F, CBR1000RR, and CB1000R. The return of the CRF450X and CRF250X will please the off-road crowd, and the Silver Wing and Ruckus, which are long-time Honda favorites among scooter riders, also return.

“Together, these machines represent an amazing array of models that appeal to different segments of the market, varying in basic concept, engine displacement, individual styling and more. And there are plenty of Honda Genuine Accessories to go along with these bikes too, which will allow owners to add those special custom touches to their bikes. With more choices and varieties than ever before, Honda showrooms are going to be a great place to shop around and let your imagination roam before you finally make your new-bike purchase decision in 2013.”

2013 Honda CBR600RR/CBR600RR C-ABS

Honda says:

The lineage behind the CBR600RR boasts ongoing track-tested, championship-winning advancements in form and function that have kept this machine at the forefront of the 600cc Supersport class. This newly redesigned CBR600RR delivers stronger engine output for an elevated level of performance, a brand-new front suspension featuring Honda’s 41mm Big Piston Fork for exceptional handling and supple action, plus all-new MotoGP-inspired bodywork that’s a product of race-tested aerodynamic design. It all adds up to a sportbike that leads the way, whether it’s at the track or just a fun afternoon ride on your favorite backroads.

- Redesigned, centrally located ram-air intake system and improved ECU and PGM-DSFI setting deliver more power in the midrange and enhanced throttle response in the high-rpm range.

- Unit Pro-Link® rear suspension features a revised shock with new damper settings for improved overall performance.
- Using knowledge gained from the Honda RC212V MotoGP race program, aerodynamic improvements were made to this newest CBR600RR, which shows a 6.5 percent decrease in drag over the previous model. The development and testing used with this all-new CBR600RR bodywork, in turn, led to aerodynamic advancements that have been incorporated into the current RC213V MotoGP racing machine.
- This newly found aerodynamic efficiency lends itself to more agile handling and improved wind deflection for enhanced rider comfort.

Goldwing and CB1100 very nice. Not sure why they kept the 1100 to 88 hp...even for an air-cooled 1100, that seems low. Seems like a fun bike to mod, though!
