Monster Energy Kawasaki's Destry Abbott To Undergo Surgery

Monster Energy Kawasaki's Destry Abbott will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair his collarbone that he broke while competing in the Round 5 of the AMA Hare and Hound race in Lucerne, Calif.

Abbott was scheduled to have surgery on his dislocated shoulder after the sixth round of the Hare and Hound series in May. He will now repair the collarbone first and when the bone is strong enough, go in for surgery on his shoulder.

"This is unfortunate for Destry championship hopes in 2010," said Off-Road Team Supervisor Jason Smigel. "He wasn't letting his shoulder injury hold him back and was showing the never-give-up attitude of a true champion. I know he will do everything possible to get healed in order to come back and finish the season strong."

Abbott was sitting second in the AMA Hare and Hound points going into the fifth round in Lucerne, while trying to go for a record-breaking six titles in the series.

"I am really bummed, especially considering I was in the hunt for the championship," said Abbott. "I can't do anything about it now, but I will do everything I can to come back better than before. I really want to thank all my fans who have encouraged and supported me during this hard time."

Abbott's progress will be updated when more information is available.
