SACHSENRING FREE PRACTICE

2015-07-11 15:52
Under blue skies the DRIVE M7 SIC Racing Team riders made a positive start as the first of the day’s practice sessions got underway at Sachsenring.

Using the same setting from the last round at Assen, Jakub Kornfeil got straight to work, immediately feeling comfortable on his #84 KTM machine. Looking strong the Czech rider put in the laps around the 3.7km circuit to conclude Free Practice One in a solid seventh position. With the wind picking up for the afternoons practice it soon became apparent that the changes made to the bike for Free Practice Two were not having the desired effect, as Kornfeil struggled to close in on the fastest time set. Despite the set-up choice Kornfeil still managed to better his time and gain valuable data to target a return to the top ten tomorrow.

Zulfahmi Khairuddin began his German Grand Prix weekend in good form as he continued to improve throughout FP1, setting his fastest time on his last lap. Working hard the Malaysian rider looked focussed and determined to hold onto a top twenty position, only narrowly missing out as the chequered flag ended the session. Following some small changes to the #63 bike Fahmi was unable to get into the same rhythm he had shown in morning practice, but with a clearer understanding of the direction needed, the 23 year old is confident he can improve ahead of qualifying.”

“We didn’t improve a lot from FP1 to FP2, so for sure we need to work on our bike set-up, but I also must improve my riding style more. We tried something different in FP2 but it didn’t work very well and I felt happier with the settings we originally had, but now we have a better direction. We are concentrating on the braking, especially in the slow corners because this is where I loose quite a lot of time. This afternoon we will study all the data and I think from this we can find the solution. Tomorrow in FP3 I have to ride hard and be there in qualifying.”

“Today has been quite difficult because this track is very short so you have to push 100% from the start and you can’t miss a single metre on the track because it costs you a lot here. I saw after FP2 that a difference of one tenth can mean many positions.
We started very well in FP1 and I felt really good on the bike; we tried quite a lot of things and the bike was working very nice, even with not so much grip we found a good setting. I could push and we were able to get a good position. In the afternoon we made some modifications and went a bit longer with the gearbox. Unfortunately this didn’t work because in the second practice there was much more wind and so the RPM on the bike was not growing like we wanted, so it was a little bit lazy. This is what we must work on for tomorrow. We have a good base from FP1, so I think we did quite a good job today and I think if we work even harder for tomorrow and find the last few things, we can be strong for qualifying.”
