Mike Jones to ride for Ángel Nieto Team in Australia2018-10-23 08:33
Australian rider to line-up alongside Karel Abraham in place of Álvaro Bautista, who moves across to the factory Ducati team to replace Jorge Lorenzo
The MotoGP World Championship title has been decided in favour of Marc Márquez after his victory in the Grand Prix of Japan, but there is still plenty at stake in the final three rounds of the season. Andrea Dovizioso, whose crash on the penultimate lap at Motegi handed the title to the Spaniard, now faces a battle to hang on to the runner-up positions, with just 9 points over Valentino Rossi and 39 over Maverick Viñales. The Ducati factory team will be joined by Álvaro Bautista in Australia, the Ángel Nieto Team rider moving across to replace the injured Jorge Lorenzo.
Home rider Mike Jones will join the Ángel Nieto Team at Phillip Island, the Australian stepping in to the Spanish MotoGP team to replace Álvaro Bautista, who in turn will cover for the injured Jorge Lorenzo at Ducati. Born in Brisbane (Australia), Jones will be contesting his home Grand Prix for the second time, having taken a fifteenth-place finish there in 2016 on just his second appearance in this category. This weekend he will ride the Ducati GP16 normally ridden by his new team-mate Karel Abraham, whilst the Czech rider will ride the Ducati GP17. Abraham is aiming to challenge for the points at Phillip Island after crashing out in Japan.
Karel Abraham: “We will give our best to be fighting for the points again in Australia. We missed a good chance in Japan because we could have been running with the group that ended up fighting for thirteenth, but we will keep working in Australia with the same objective. We will be riding the Ducati GP17 for the first time and I am grateful to the team for the opportunity to do this. Hopefully we can take it to a strong result.”
Mike Jones: “ I’m very excited and grateful to race with the Ángel Nieto Team at my home race of the MotoGP. Phillip Island is a circuit that I know well and enjoy very much. I look forward to learning step by step throughout the weekend and ultimately riding to the best of my ability”.
