Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Davalos Caps Off 250 Career with Top 10 Finish

2019-05-06 15:39
Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos lined up for his final 250 supercross race inside Sam Boyd Stadium, collecting a top-10 finish during his 101st start as he crossed the finish line in ninth. The finish was Davalos’ 77th top-10 result on a career that has already spanned 13 years. Teammate Garrett Marchbanks rounded out the top 10 with a come from behind ride and was awarded AMA Rookie of the Year. Adam Cianicarulo entered the night in hopes of earning his first championship, but a mistake near the end of the race forced him into the mechanic's area and outside the top 10. He ended the series second overall.

The day started well for Davalos as he qualified third overall in the east. He rode well in his heat, finishing second and grabbing a good gate pick for the main event. When the riders came around the first lap of the main event, Davalos had made his way up to 10th to start and was looking to move quickly on the single lined track. He was up to sixth by Lap 4 but had a little get off, remounting in ninth where he ended the night.

“I am really proud of what I’ve accomplished throughout my career,” said Davalos. “I would have liked to end this part of my career with a podium but I’m leaving here healthy and ready for outdoors. I’ve been so blessed to be a part of the best team in the pits and they really feel like family to me. I’m excited to see what the future holds for me and we’ll take it all as it comes.”

Rookie Marchbanks closed out his first supercross season with his sixth top-10 finish. The season has seen both highs and lows, with each race providing a learning experience. In the main event in Las Vegas, Marchbanks found himself in 16th on the first lap and worked hard to put his Kawasaki KX250 inside the top 10. Even with the single-lined track making it hard to pass, Marchbanks found himself rounding out the top 10 when the checkered flag flew.

His efforts throughout the season caught the eye of the American Motorcyclist Association who awarded him with Rookie of the Year honors.

“I have had some great races and other races that I would have liked to forget,” said Marchbanks. “But I have learned a lot and know what I can work on for next year. I have the best team that has supported my progress and my tough times. I am ready to get back to motocross racing and try to improve on my results from last year.”

Losing with grace is probably one of the hardest things for an athlete to do, but that is how Cianciarulo handled a difficult night. The Floridian looked to collect his first championship and found himself in good position in third as the main event clicked into the second half. As he rounded a corner on Lap 11, his bike caught a tuff block and on the next jump Cianciarulo found himself down. He was very quick to get up only to find his bike too damaged to continue as full speed. After visiting the mechanics area, Cianciarulo still managed to finish the race and was scored 20th.

“I felt fine as I came through that section but ended up on the ground,” said Cianciarulo. “I think I would have been fine if the bike didn’t get mangled in the crash. It’s unfortunate that I couldn’t get back out there to fight back. There are a lot of guys that have helped me get here and as much as I’m going to be hard on myself, I wanted to get this for them too. I made the mistake and wish I didn’t. But you can’t turn back time and I have to keep looking forward. I’m going to get one of these things some day.”
