The first Moto3 race of 2020 beckons for PETRONAS Sprinta Racing riders John McPhee and Khairul Idham Pawi, as the QatarGP gets underway at Losail International Circuit this weekend. Having just completed a three-day test at the same circuit, the team is well prepared to tackle the challenges of the 5.4km track.

Now in his second year with the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing squad, McPhee is looking to build on his success of last year, which saw him claim two pole positions, one fastest lap, one race win and a total of three podium finishes. The Scot has enjoyed a strong pre-season test in Qatar aboard his Honda NSF250RW, has good form at Losail having been on the podium in 2017 and now hopes to add more victories to his score sheet.

After being forced to the sidelines last year as he recovered from surgery, KIP makes his return to the Moto3 category, and to a GP race, this weekend and aims to replicate the previous success he has enjoyed in the series. Pre-season has seen the Malaysian talent focus on reacclimatising to the Honda before heading into the first of the season in just a few days time.

With the cancellation of the MotoGP category at Losail International Circuit, Moto3 action will now begin at 1.25pm local time (11.25am CET and 10:25am GMT) with the first of Friday’s two Free Practice sessions. The first race of the 2020 season will commence on Sunday at 4:20pm local time (2:20pm CET and 1:20pm GMT).

John McPhee

Overall the 2020 pre-season has been really productive. It’s the first time in my racing career that I have the same bike, team and crew for two seasons in a row, so that’s something really valuable. It means that we have been able to focus purely on riding and finding the correct feeling with the bike. After the last few days testing here in Qatar, I feel ready and I’m really looking forward to the first race. Obviously as a rider the test is important, but the race is where the action really begins.
