Comments from Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP riders after FP3 at the Austrian GP2020-08-17 01:04
Following a drying FP3 session, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales topped the FP3 timesheets and has secured a place for this afternoon‘s Q2. Valentino Rossi wasn‘t able to improve on his fully dry FP1 time. He will later take part in Q1 at the Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich.
With the sun coming out midway through FP3 at a damp Spielberg track, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi were in with a chance to get in a hot lap after all. Trying to make the most of the opportunity, the team-mates went all out and completed this morning‘s session in 1st and 11th place respectively. However, their 3rd and 13th position in the combined free practice timesheets means that only Viñales is safely through to Q2, whilst Rossi will have to take part in this afternoon‘s Q1 session.
Noticing that the track conditions were improving throughout the 45-minutes of morning practice time, Viñales was a man on a mission. He was still ranked in 11th place in the combined results in the final minutes of FP3, thanks to his FP1 time, but he was determined to deliver a top-10 performance. A 1‘24.317s, set on lap 20/22, put him at the top of FP3, 0.046s ahead of his closest rival. This strong lap also earned him 3rd in the combined free practice timesheets, 0.124s from first.
Rossi started FP3 in a similar situation as his team-mate, eagerly hoping that the Spielberg track would dry fast enough for him to put in a time attack towards end of the session. He needed to find 0.126s to get into the top 10. The Italian pushed hard in the final minutes, clocking a 1’25.021s, with an 11th position in the FP3 rankings as a result, 0.704s off his team-mate‘s time. It wasn‘t fast enough to improve on his 1‘24.879s set in FP1, leaving him 13th in combined results, 0.686s from the top.
Viñales and Rossi will be back on track from 13:30 - 14:00 local track time (GMT+2) for FP4. Rossi will then take part in Q1, held from 14:10 - 14:25, hoping to join Viñales in Q2, ridden from 14:35 - 14:50.

I think for today it was really important to get through to Q2, because the weather conditions are changing so fast here, and this could also happen during qualifying. So, for me it was really important to stay inside the top 10. Already on the wet the feeling was amazing, I could make really good lap times, and then when I switched to the dry tyres the feeling continued, and I felt great on the bike. I‘m very happy with the team, because we worked really well from yesterday to today, and I think we made a big improvement on the bike, especially in terms of consistency. For the afternoon, we will try to make more laps on the bike, trying to understand what is the best way for us to go fast and also to understand the tyres, because if tomorrow is a flag-to-flag race we will need to know which tyre we should use. Anyway, with the track going from wet to dry this morning, I felt fantastic on bike.

These were very tricky conditions. Later on in the FP3 session the track became dry, but this is always difficult, and in the end I wasn't able to improve on my FP1 lap time, so I'm out of Q2. It will be harder, because we have to take part in Q1 this afternoon, and we'll have to wait and see what the weather is going to be like.
