Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales has secured a place in Q2, to be held later today at the Spielberg circuit. Valentino Rossi will have to take part in this afternoon‘s Q1.

This morning, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi put in their bids for a place in the Grand Prix of Styria Q2 session. Viñales set a benchmark lap halfway through FP3, which eventually earned him fifth place and a spot in Q2. Rossi improved his best Friday time by 0.428s but came just 0.155s short for a place inside the top 10. He will have to negotiate Q1 this afternoon.

Viñales was quick to switch to the soft-soft tyre combination to get a hot lap in before the usual time attack at the end of FP3. His 1‘23.617s, set on lap 15/25, put him in provisional first place until the fight for the top 10 went to another level in the final minutes of the session. However, his lap was strong enough to keep him in fifth in the FP3 and the combined free practice results, 0.161s from first.

Rossi knew he had work to do this morning to get into the top 10 to promote directly into Q2. The Italian pushed until the very last second of FP3, clocking a 1’23.950s, on lap 27/27 when the chequered flag had already come out. He had completed more laps than any other MotoGP rider, but it wasn‘t enough. He ended the session in 15th position, 0.494s from the top and got the same result in the combined free practice timesheets.

Viñales and Rossi will be back on track from 13:30 - 14:00 local track time (GMT+2) for FP4. Rossi will then take part in Q1, held from 14:10 - 14:25, hoping to join Viñales in Q2, ridden from 14:35 - 14:50.

The feelings are really good. I'm really happy because I was quite strong with the race set-up, I was towards the top of the rankings, and that's the most important. Anyway, for the afternoon we still have to improve our one-lap pace a bit more, because I don't feel like we're in perfect condition yet. For the next practice I will try to be smoother on the track, trying to understand the best way to ride, especially in sector 3. I'm losing some tenths there, and we need to improve this. We will try our best and, for sure, we will try to get onto the front row. I will try to push really hard during qualifying.

This morning was not so bad at the beginning, because I have good pace. We changed something on the bike. But in the end it's a shame, because on the last lap I was fast, but I made a mistake in Turn 9, and as a result I have to take part in Q1.
