Comments from the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP riders after FP1 at the Catalan GP

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi took the first steps in preparing for Sunday‘s Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya during this morning‘s FP1. The pair ended the session in 4th and 8th position respectively.

The Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team were welcomed to the opening day of track action at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya by beautiful sunshine and clear skies. Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi used the sunny but cool riding conditions to the fullest, setting the 4th and 8th fastest time in FP1.

Viñales hopped back aboard his YZR-M1 for the first time after his win in Misano less than a week ago. He continued the positive momentum in the 45-minute FP1 session, whilst working on the race set-up for Sunday. Though he didn‘t put in a mini time-attack at the end, his 1‘41.105s, set on lap 5/22, earned him 4th place, 0.674s off the fastest time.

Rossi followed a similar work programme to his team-mate's in the morning practice. He set out on track with the intention of only concerning himself with his M1‘s set-up and getting used to the lower grip levels than they had experienced in the last two weeks. However, the Italian always enjoys riding at the Barcelona track and was soon in his element. He set a 1‘41.536s on lap 6/20 and wrapped up the session in 8th position, 1.105s from the top.

Position: 4th | Best lap time: 1'41.105 (+0.674s) | Laps: 22

FP1 was quite good. I'm very happy about how the bike is working, because on the first run I could ride with a good rhythm. But we need to keep working, for sure. The track is in a difficult condition. I'm happy about how the bike was working on a really low-grip track. So, for FP2 we're going to concentrate on the race again, and we will try to work very hard.

The first practice wasn't too bad. The track conditions here in Barcelona are very different from what we had in Misano, especially because the circuit provides a lot less grip. But the feeling at the beginning of this weekend is quite good. We have to work, for sure, because the tyre drops a lot, but we are there.
