Challenging day in the cold for PETRONAS Sprinta Racing

2020-10-17 04:38
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Moto2 riders Jake Dixon and Xavi Vierge experienced a difficult first day for the Aragon GP at MotorLand Aragón, where cold temperatures forced the morning session to be delayed. A bad feeling on the bike prevented Dixon from bettering 14th, while Vierge, who fractured both feet less than seven days ago was 21st.

With the cold track conditions at the beginning of the session, Dixon bided his time until the final quarter of the session to set his time attack laps. The Brit ended FP1 6th with a best lap of 1min 53.753secs. A set up change between the two sessions saw Jake struggle in FP2 to make the necessary progress to significantly improve his time. He ended the afternoon session, and day overall, 14th with a 1min 53.538secs lap time.

Coming into this weekend with two fractured feet, Vierge used FP1 to understand the feeling aboard his triumph-powered Kalex. The Spaniard set a fastest lap of 1min 55.231 secs, which placed him 23rd. Riding through the pain in his right foot, Xavi gave his best in FP2 but was unable to lap faster than 1min 53.999secs, which places him 21st in the session and overall.

Tomorrow’s FP3 session will get underway at 11.25am local time (5.25pm MYT) for the Moto2 duo, with qualifying due to start at 3.10pm local time (9.10pm MYT).

14th (1'53.538)

This morning was not so bad: I felt good on the bike, but we needed to change a few things. This afternoon we changed some things on the bike, but it did not feel good. We need to put our heads together tonight and understand what direction we need to be going in here, because I couldn’t put the lap together like I wanted during FP2. It’s not ideal but we’ll analyse the data and I know the team will do a good job. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll be in a better position than we were today and I’m looking at going straight through to Q2 again tomorrow.
