Productive Valencia GP opening day for Vierge

2020-11-16 09:28
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge enjoyed two dry Free Practice sessions at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, unlike last week that saw the Moto2 rider battle wet conditions. At the end of an extremely close Grand Prix de la Comunitat Valenciana opening day, Vierge was 20th.

As was seen in the other classes, the dry Circuit Ricardo Tormo generated a fast-paced and tight FP1 session for the Moto2 riders. Vierge worked through his planned programme during the 40 minutes and gathered vital data for Sunday’s race. The Spaniard ended FP1 21st with a best time of 1min 35.756secs.

FP2 also proved to be another session where riders were only separated by hundredths, or thousandths, of a second, with the gap between the top 24 riders just 0.930secs. Vierge used the session to continue testing different set-ups on his Triumph-powered Kalex, opting not to set a true flying lap. At the end of FP2, Xavi’s fastest lap of 1min 35.482secs saw him end the session, and the day, 20th.

Vierge will be back on track at 11.55am local time (6.55pm MYT) for FP3, before Qualifying gets underway at 3.50pm local time (10.50pm MYT).

20th (1'35.482)

It was a very productive day that we treated more like a test day, than Free Practice. We tried some things for this weekend, but also for next year. There were a lot of things that we found today and a lot is for the better! We know which things that we have tested will help us to improve. We have seen previously that we were fast over a single lap, but not consistently quick, and then the opposite, so we have a lot of data to compare. Tomorrow we need to focus on the one lap pace again in FP3, to help get us through to Q2, but we know where we need to improve. I’m happy that we can have some good sessions tomorrow.
