Unpredictable Valencia Moto2 qualifying day for Xavi Vierge2020-11-16 01:34
Fluctuating weather added an unpredictable element to qualifying day around Circuit Ricardo Tormo for PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge. After another tight session, Vierge will start the penultimate Moto2 race of the year, the Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana, 13th.
Vierge immediately improved upon his fastest time from yesterday in FP3, moving to within two tenths of an automatic Q2 spot. At the halfway point, the Spaniard was 0.172secs shy of the top-14. Xavi was able to set the 12th fastest time of the session – 1min 34.972secs – which, as the 14th fastest time in the combined standings, saw him through to Q2.
Qualifying proved to be another session where the Moto2 riders were separated by just fractions of a second, with all 18 Q2 riders separated by just 0.995secs. Vierge’s initial laps placed him sixth, before he slipped back to hold a lap time just outside of the top-ten. Xavi’s final flying lap of 1min 34.864secs placed him 13th when the chequered flag came out, despite being just 0.446secs shy of the pole sitter.
Vierge will take to the track tomorrow at 9.30am local time (4.30pm MYT) for Warm Up, before the lights go out for the 25-lap Moto2 race at 12.20pm local time (7.20pm MYT).
Of course 13th position is not what we want, but I do think that it has been a positive day. We have tried a lot of things with the bike, making another step forward in FP3, and then again in qualifying. We went straight through to Q2 in a really tight session and we were only two tenths away from the fastest rider, which is really positive. We had a good rhythm and I think we have a good pace for tomorrow as well. It wasn’t enough to be on the front two rows, which was our goal, but it was so tight today and I have been able to ride the bike how I want. Overall I am really happy with the day, the team has worked so hard and hopefully tomorrow we can make another step forward.
