Vexing day in the desert for Vierge and Dixon2021-04-06 07:48
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Moto2 riders experienced a difficult day in the desert on the opening day of the Doha GP, the second round of the 2021 season. Xavi Vierge fell just short of the all-important top-14 places, which would secure a Q2 spot, with 15th, while team-mate Jake Dixon ended the day 18th.
Vierge started the day off with a positive Free Practice 1, staying with the top-ten of the timesheets throughout the 40 minutes. Posting a fastest lap of 2mins 0.582secs on his final run, Xavi ended FP1 eighth. Although the Spaniard was able to stay within the top-14 places for the majority of FP2, at the chequered flag his 1min 59.782secs lap placed him 15th in session, and overall.
Team-mate Dixon started FP1 with a series of quick laps, before easing off in the second half of the session. The Brit ended the 40 minutes in 19th, after posting a 2mins 1.101secs lap. Jake was also able to stay within the Q2 promotion places for most of FP2, after setting his fastest lap – 1min 59.861secs – early on in the session. Dixon was unable to improve on this and ended the day in 18th.
The final free practice session of the weekend for Vierge and Dixon will start at 2.20pm local time (7.20pm MYT) tomorrow, ahead of the Moto2 qualifying sessions at 6.25pm local time (11.25pm MYT).
I’m not happy because we wanted to be within the top-14 places, that was our goal for today and we just missed out on that. Despite this, it has been a positive day as we made a good improvement this morning, during the hot conditions. When the track conditions made it possible for people to go faster, we were not able to improve our time as much as the rest of the field. We still had a good pace, it was just that we missed doing a fast lap, so now we will work hard to make another step forward tomorrow.
