Yves Demaria, the reigning MX3 World Champion, broke ligaments in his foot at Asti today for the Grand Prix of Italy and will need surgery in Monaco tomorrow.
Under heavy rain and muddy conditions Demaria had just passed team-mate Julien Bill for second place in the first moto when he crashed overtaking a backmarker and caught his foot against the machine. The injury was quite serious as he sustained a nasty and deep cut, aside from the ligament damage.
Bill went on to take second place in the moto and scored the runner-up position overall thanks to fifth spot in the next race.
Sven Breugelmans retired in the first race after two crashes. He was holding third, moved up to second and then got stuck in mud twice in the second moto. The second incident led to his retirement.
