Interview with Freestyle Motocross Star Wiley Fullmer
If you aren’t already, you need to become familiar with the name Wiley Fullmer. Wiley, is one of the best freestyle motocross riders here at the AST Dew Tour. In 2006, Wiley won the Nokia Air and Style competition, he’s won a Monster Jam X-games qualifier, a few Step Up competitions and has done well at almost every event he enters. With all this success he still continues to have a hilarious yet charming personality with the fans! I got to catch up with funny man Wiley Fullmer after his main event, which left him taking 10th this season; pretty good for someone who hasn’t been in it that long.

J.What’s going on man how’s the day going for you?
W.Doin’ Super Duper!

J.How did the rest of today go for you?
W.It went good, I pulled top 10 overall, so I’m happy with that. I can’t be mad at it!

J.How’d you do in the last round?
W.Last round I did a gay trick at the end but whatever.

J.What was the trick?
W.I did a saran wrap and I totally could have done something better!

J.You’ve been in this for three years, when did you start doing backflips?
W.Actually, when I was sixteen I was watching it on t.v and just went out on my parents ranch and did it in a big pile of cow crap! I landed it my second try so I’ve been doing them since then.

J.No foam pit?
W.Nope, I’ve done a foam pit a couple of times at Mike Metzger’s house but I only jumped into it one day like four or five times and that’s it.

J.What’s you’re favorite trick?
W.Kiss of Death! It’s fun.

J.Looks like fun! When did you first start riding?
W.When I was fourteen.

J.What kind of bike?
W.Oh man, I used to steel my brother’s Kawasaki KX125 and take that out to go ride all the time.

J.Back then did you ever think you would be in something like the Dew Tour or X-Games?
W.No, I never thought I would. I wanted to be and now glad that I am. That was definitly was my goal and dream was to be in these big events.

J.Did you just start racing motocross and went from there?
W.I never raced. I can race and I’ve done a couple just for fun. Freestyle has always been my thing

J.Cool! What do you do to train besides practice?
W.I go to the gym, pump some iron even though I’m a little noodle, it’s hurts too bad all the time but usually I go to the track. Most of my excersise is from riding at the track.

J.Do you do any bicycle training like some of the other riders?
W.Every once in a while I’ll go ride my bike with some friends of mine and go down to the skate park and play around. That’s a workout too! The bicycle and peddlling, I can’t handle that. That’s too tough for me! (laughs)

J.Do you have any weird quirks that you do before you go out and ride? Any superstitions?
W.You know, I don’t know. Everything that I do is weird! If I put my pants on before I put my knee pads on that day, then I don’t ride that day. Those are the bad days. Something’s going wrong in my head! (laughs)

J.Are you picky about any part of your bike?
W.Just the handlebars and suspension.

J.Why’s that?
W.With you’re handlebars, you’re hands control everything so when everything around you’re handlebars feels good then your whole bike feels good most of the time.

J.You ride Renthal or Pro-Taper bars?
W.No, I have Universal Handlebars.

Congratulations to Wiley for his great results this season and thanks for the interview!

Freestyle Motocross-Unlike anything else.
Freestyle motocross is obviously a tough sport but it’s even tougher when all the guys you are competing against are recognized as the best in the world. Last names like Fullmer, Adams, Stenberg and Lusk would make any top FMX rider quiver at the thought of having to compete against them. You definitely need to be on the top of your game and ride to the best of your abilities.
Not only is FMX extremely dangerous it’s also something you have to be totally dedicated too. It’s also a huge mind game. You have to stay extremely focused and calm. On competition day this weekend I saw most riders listening to iPods, hanging out with friends or watching another event. I guess those are all ways that they took their mind off the competition to stay cool and collected. Then when it’s time to rock and they line up on the roll in ramp that’s when you can tell each rider is pumped. After, you can see a look of relief on their faces!

Another thing I’ve noticed about the FMX world is that most of these guys seem pretty tough with their tattoos and mannerisms. In reality these guys are fathers and husbands who also have kids and love to be with their families. They are sweet to their fans and have a good head on their shoulders. Most riders just act super tough because they are in a super tough sport. FMX isn’t like any other sport out there. It takes a different person to want to do a back flip 70 ft in the air on a 200 LB dirt bike. FMX rider’s are the kind of people that extreme sports fans all around the world would probably pass out if they had the chance to chill with anyone of them.

After realizing all of this it was time to watch the FMX Finals. Taking the top 3 spots were Nate Adams Jeremy Stenberg and Todd Potter. Nate Adams will also be taking home the Dew Cup tomorrow evening!

FMX Update
After the grueling FMX prelims on Thursday the top 10 riders were chosen to compete in tonight’s finals. I was surprised to see that a couple of my favorite riders like Ronnie Faisst and Ronnie Renner didn’t make it onto that awe-inspiring list. All of the guys who are either on it or just quite didn’t make it are all incredible riders. Each one can ride like we only dream about.

That’s one thing that has always puzzled me; how comfortable FMX riders are upside down. I don’t understand it now and probably never will unless I were to try it for myself. I don’t think I’ll be doing a back flip on my motocross bike anytime soon! I’ll leave it to the pros.

Right now it looks like its going to rain and the forecast calls for a 70% chance so hopefully FMX will run tonight at 7:30 like the schedule says. There are tarps on the BMX dirt course right now but I’m not positve if theres the same on the FMX ramps. When the first sprinkle drops normally the FMX course will close because it’s just to dangerous. We definitly don’t want to see all the riders miss a jump because of a slippery ramp!

I’ll keep you guys updated as the day goes on!

The AST Dew Tour, An Exciting Weekend For Every Action Sports Fan.
With a prize purse worth over 3 million dollars, over 285 athletes, and 5 exciting stops, the AST Dew Tour (established 2005) has been recognized as the world’s premier season long action sports tour. Now being broadcasted internationally through NBC the Dew Tour has grown astonishingly throughout the years as it is the only tour to feature skateboarding, BMX, and Freestyle Motocross all together. My hometown of Orlando, FL is lucky enough to hold the final round of the tour. How Exciting!

Athletes on the tour have well known names like Ryan Sheckler, Mike Mason, Nate Adams, Bob Burnquist, Scotty Cramner, Jamie Bestwick, and Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg. Each day athletes from all 3 areas will be competing to hopefully rack up enough points to win the Dew Cup on Sunday. Since this is the last round, hopefully we will be seeing each athlete give it all they got and show us some exciting tricks.

The weekend will kick off today Thursday October 18th with FMX practice and later FMX preliminaries. Sunday night will host the Dew Tour awards banquet where each champion will be crowned for the 2007 season. Be sure to either come out to the event or watch it on NBC this weekend!
